Location: Westland, on Ann Arbor Trail between Middlebelt and Inkster Roads.
History: The area where Cooper School is was originally a landfill owned by Detroit but
in the 1950's it was closed and capped with a layer of clay. Then the school was opened in 1966. Everything had been just dandy until 1991 when a woman was walking her dog and saw a substance leaking from
the clay sealed landfill into a local waterway. The school was closed and soil tests found contaminants buried
in the property, the contaminants included cadmium and mercury. Livonia Public Schools neads $1.3 million to clean it
up. I rode by the school on my bike and at a point smelled something but it wasn't that bad. There is a huge fence
in the front of the school. However, you can still get into it.
